Alta Hits Pudding Hill for 2009 Burton Product Launch
Its that time of the year again where Higherground introduce retailers to next seasons Burton Product. This Year the Product Launch returned to a venue of past, Pudding Hill at the base of Mt Hutt. Mt Hutt had been lucky enough to receive 2 x close to 1 metre dumps in the past 10 days, so conditions were looking better than ever to demo Burton 2009 boards and bindings. Cookie, Matt, Jamie, Dee and first time product launch participant Dave, our new Alta Newmarket Manager rocked along. Take a look at some of the goings on.

In Store Skate Demo
Corban from Remain Industries set up a small section of his 150sqm mobile skate park in store for the crew to have bit of a session on. Jake from Lower bought up a box of records and played some tunes and a few laughs were had.
The whole thing was a bit of an experiment, can a retail store become a decent skate park for an overnight session and then be open in the morning for customers?
Answer was most definitely yes. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the next round. We will step it up significantly to include one of the best mini ramps in the country, a serious crowd and a bucket load more hype!

New season Burton and RIDE gear already in store

This is the earliest we have ever received delivery of New Season snowboard gear from both Burton and RIDE.
We have our full delivery from Burton including boards, boots, bindings, outerwear and accessories. Of special interest check out the Custom LTD binding from the Coalition range. This binding has limited distribution, only available in specialist snowboard stores. At $349.95 it is the cheapest binding available with the all new Cap Strap. Also the all new Burton Blunt board priced at $649.95 This is a very affordable, all round freestyle board, the most "bang for ya buck" we have ever seen from the Burton range.
RIDE boards are looking awesome as always and the bindings with their signature bombproof aluminium base plates have some colour combos you really want to check out!
The rest of the new season snowboard gear is coming in over the next few weeks and should all be in store by mid April. Brands include boards from Forum, Rome and Venue (from Northwave). Bindings from Drake. Boots from 32, Northwave and DC. Outerwear from Sessions, RPM, DC, Quiksilver and Roxy. We will keep you posted.

Yeehaa!! The doors are open on our new store located in Auckland's Premium Shopping District, Newmarket. A brand new 250sqm 'shed ' stacked full with Snow and Skate Hardware, Streetware, Shoes and Accessories. Gear from all the brands we have represented for 12 years in Queenstown, plus we have introduced a few new ones too, including Federation, Element and Circa.
Once again, only genuine and knowledgeable staff to assist with your purchase should you require. Jess is new to our crew and brings a fresh dash of energy and enthusiasm. Nick Mitchell our skate expert, skates for Globe and Blind and is in store Sunday and Monday .
The Newmarket store is conveniently located at 14 Teed St, Newmarket, just 100 metres off Broadway (Map). 'See same location, just a new sign!'
Without doubt the biggest news from the crew at ALTA this season is all about the name change.
The store has been operating in Queenstown for 10 years. Originally opened as Steep & Cheap with 20 rental boards and a handful of beanies and sunscreen for sale. Three years later the store moved to a larger location, expanding it's retail and the name was abbreviated to S&C Snowboard Shop. This it remained up until April 1st of this year.
On 1st April 2005 the store was renamed ALTA. And by the way, that's after some special features on local mountain the Remarkables, not the clowns in Utah who don't allow snowboarding!
Now the key thing to note here is that nothing else has changed. SAME PEOPLE, SAME PLACE, SAME PRODUCT just a NEW NAME.
Why the full name change you might ask? Ask the owners or staff and you will get a variety of reasons. From the simple 'why not?' To some marketing jargon babble about 'target market realignment'. Following is some of the more interesting replies:
Danielle - we're not Steep & we are definitely not Cheap!
Matt Finnigan - I was sick of having to repeat S&C on the phone as the name just didn't quite roll off the tongue right and people were unable to find it on their accounts list as there was always confusion with spelling.
Matt Phare - S&C isn't even a name
Jamie Bassett - to confuse our customers
Ted Hanna - eerrh…… I don't know.
Finally I asked Andrew (Cookie) Clark why they chose ALTA and he came up with this interesting reply.
We chose ALTA for three main reasons.
1) Because we liked the look and sound of the word.
2) We know that all local and visiting snowboarders who have experienced the terrain around Lake Alta at the Remarkables know it is world class terrain deserving admiration and respect. This is constantly what we try to earn from our customers, suppliers and industry peers.
3) We wanted a name that represented Queenstown and the local mountains, especially for our second store which opens in Newmarket, Auckland on November 1st this year!
MORE ON THAT LATER!!!
